The High Country of NC has a phenomenal
education program for children. Appalachian
State University was originally a Teacher’s
College, and continues to offer a fantastic
education program, which in turn supplies Watauga and
surrounding counties with exceptional
educators. Avery County offers a relatively
small average class size of 20 students, which
is better that the state average. Watauga
County offers a total of 89% schools with
Excellence and Distinction, while NC’s total is
23%.
Healthcare is abundant in the High Country. In
addition to the many family practices in the
area, there are three major hospitals in the
area, which offer a variety of healthcare
services. Watauga Medical Center and Blowing
Rock Hospital are located in Watauga County and
Charles A. Cannon, Jr. Memorial Hospital is
located in Avery County.
