Fishing is a huge sport and outdoor activity in
the mountains of the High Country as there are
numerous mountain brooks and streams that flow
from the major rivers in the region.
In
Boone, the Watauga River and the North Fork of
the New River meander through the landscapes and
are some of the most popular fishing spots in
the area. In Banner Elk, the Watauga
River continues to flow towards
beautiful Linville and into East
Tennessee and is known as an unspoiled
area, perfect for fishing. There are
plenty of secluded spots to fish, many of which
are located along the Blue Ridge Parkway or just
off the main roads in the area like Highway 105
and Highway 194. Stocked seasonally and
annually, both rivers and their many tributaries
are full of several different kinds of trout,
red-eye bass, small and largemouth bass,
muskellunge, whitefish, and crappie. Some of the
well known streams and fishing holes include:
Wilson Creek, Elk River (between Banner Elk and
Elk Park on Hwy. 194) Howard’s Creek (just off
Hwy 194 in Boone), and Boone’s Fork (off Watauga
River above Hound Ears).
In addition to the smaller, scenic rivers and
streams to fish from, the High Country abounds
with lakes and trout fishing ponds in Western
North Carolina as well. Atop Beech
Mountain, near Banner Elk, is Buckeye Lake, a
smaller lake that is surrounded by lush forests
and panoramic views. Fishing is allowed on
Buckeye Lake and on a summer day you are likely
to find a fishing partner or two as the lake is
very popular among residents. Closer to Banner
Elk off of Hickory Nut Gap road is The Mill Pond.
The Mill Pond is a great place to feed
the ducks while enjoying a picnic by the
waterfall. The Mill Pond also hosts an
annual High Country kid's fishing
tournament in the Spring time. For an easier catch, head on over to
Grandfather Trout Pond which is located right
off Highway 105 across from the entrance to
Seven Devils. Fish in this well stocked pond
and take home your catch to make a tasty meal.
Looking for a longer fishing adventure? There

the region that are happy to help you with any
fishing questions you might have, and all offer
excellent fishing trips of different lengths.
