During the summer months many
Western North Carolina festivals attract
visitors to the High Country. The Grandfather
Mountain Highland Games is one of the most
popular; an annual festival
held in Banner Elk, celebrating Scottish
culture.
The
Scottish Highland Games are a gathering of
clans, guests, families, sponsors, patrons and
visitors, showcasing
traditional dancing, piping, drumming, athletic
achievement, music and Gaelic culture in the
High Country.
Early
fall means it’s time for the annual
Woolly Worm Festival, held in Banner Elk. Because the
winter weather is a common conversation piece
for the people of Banner Elk, the Woolly Worm
Festival is held in order to predict the winter
weather forecast. For 30 years now the town of
Banner Elk has raced black and brown striped
worms to determine which worm deserves the honor
of making the forecast. Tradition states that
black stripes predict cold, snowy weather while
brown strips tend to allude to more mild
conditions. The woolly worm has proved to be all
or mostly correct eighty-five percent of the
time.
The
lush colors of Fall are the backdrop to the
annual Valle Crucis County Fair. The Valle
Crucis Fair is sponsored by the Holy Cross
Episcopal Church. One of the goals of the Fair
is to display a home-grown atmosphere. The canned
goods, cakes, muffins, and cookies are all made
in home kitchens of the High Country. All of the
entertainment is local and includes bluegrass,
storytelling, poetry readings and clogging. The
Valle Crucis Fair is a great way to enjoy the
great fall colors and temperatures while
enjoying home-made treats.
There is always something exciting going
on in the High Country, regardless of
the time of year. The cultural
events that take place in our Western
North Carolina Mountains are renowned as
