When you live in the High
Country, or own your very own NC mountain
getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you can
enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle in one of the
most beautiful places in the southeast where hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding,
fishing, and whitewater rafting activities
abound. Boone, Banner Elk, and Blowing Rock are located along several ancient
rivers and their tributaries, making it the
perfect place to enjoy canoeing, kayaking
and even a little NC white water rafting.
Whether you long for a peaceful day canoeing on
the Watauga River, or an action packed
whitewater adventure, there are several local
guide companies in the region ready to help. On
this page we've listed some of these rafting
companies and provided a little bit of helpful
information on the opportunities and rivers in
the area.
 The Watauga River originates at the slopes of
Grandfather Mountain and eventually flows into
East Tennessee, with tributaries branching out
all through the High Country. The rapids along the Watauga
River are generally milder, and most rafting
companies start their season around Memorial Day
and close around Labor Day when the rapids are
at their highest. For class III-IV rapids,
rafters can take a trip down the Nolichucky
River, a beautiful river in East Tennessee, just
over the North Carolina state line.
 The North Fork of the New River flows through
Boone NC into Ashe County and creates some
really nice, secluded spots to canoe. NC New
River canoe trips can be guided or solo, both
offering an adventure for every level of
paddlers. Most of
these spots are located in Watauga County,
however, near
Todd
and Ashe County there are several excellent
spots off Railroad Grade Road, a beautiful
scenic road that follows a path along the river.
