The Blue Ridge Parkway runs from the
southern terminus of Shenandoah National Park's
Skyline Drive in Virginia at Rockfish Gap to
U.S. Route 441 at Oconaluftee in the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North
Carolina. Here in the High Country you can find
some of the most popular destinations along the
worlds longest, narrowest national park. Famous
Blue Ridge Parkway stops like the Linn Cove
Viaduct, Moses Cone Manor, Julian Price Memorial
Park, and Linville Falls are just a few of the
great places you can venture to in the area.
The Linn Cove Viaduct is a 1,243 foot concrete
bridge that snakes along the curves of
Grandfather Mountain in the Linville and Banner
Elk region of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Completed
in 1983, the Linn Cove Viaduct cost about 10
million dollars to construct and was the perfect
solution to the damage that the cut and fill
mountain roads had done over the years to the
mountain slopes. The National Park Services runs
a visitor center and museum at the viaduct and
walking trails are all around this region and
are part of the Blue Ridge Parkway trail
network. The bridge has received eleven design
awards, and over the years has been featured in
various publications for its famed engineering.
Not far from the Linn Cove Viaduct is beautiful
Linville Falls, in Linville North Carolina. This
famous waterfall falls majestically into a deep
gorge below. The Linville Gorge
wilderness area is filled with beautiful
scenery, including many different types of rare
mountain trees. Hiking is done around the falls
and near the park is a nice campground and
picnic area along the Linville River. This
region of the Blue Ridge Parkway is very popular
in the warmer months and there are many off the
parkway hotels, charming inns and quaint and
cozy bed and breakfast inns in the area.
In Blowing Rock visitors can enjoy the Moses H.
Cone Manor and Julian Price Memorial Park, which
is the largest camping area on the parkway in
our region. This beautiful country estate was
the home of Moses H. Cone and contains 3500
acres which feature a 16 acre trout lake, a 22
acre bass lake, and over 25 miles of carriage
trails, perfect for hiking and horseback riding.
The inside of the
home has been well preserved
and its 13,000 square feet is the site of Flat
Top Manor and craft museum. Together with the
Julian Price Memorial Park, the Moses H. Cone
Manor area is the largest developed area for
recreation in all of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Get out and enjoy the pristine mountain scenery.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is perfect for a
leisurely scenic drive, hiking, mountain
biking, fishing, canoeing, horseback
riding, and even camping.
