State University and Lees-McRae College.
Appalachian State University is a public,
liberal arts university located in downtown
Boone North Carolina. Offering numerous
undergraduate, masters and doctoral level
degrees, Appalachian State University was
recognized in 2001 as TIME Magazine’s College
of the Year.
Recognized as the university with
the highest elevation east of the Mississippi
River, Boone’s Kidd Brewer Stadium sits at a
well publicized elevation of 3,333 feet above
sea level, however Appalachian State University
is perhaps better known for its three time
consecutive football champions, the
Mountaineers.
The campus spans 1,300 acres and is home
to over 15,000 enrolled students. The university has
over five colleges which includes: Arts and
Sciences, Fine and Applied Arts, Business,
Music, and Education. These colleges offer over
95 undergraduate degrees, 81 graduate courses of
study and even a few new doctoral degrees in
Educational Leadership. Currently, construction is underway to give the university
a few facelifts and in the next few years ASU
will have several new and improved buildings and
dormitories.
Lees-McRae College is a private, four year
college in beautiful Banner Elk North Carolina.
Lees-McRae has a long history in the area and
was founded by two women, Suzanna Lees and
Elizabeth
McRae in 1899 as an all-female normal
and high school. In 1907 the school became
chartered by the state and its male founder,
Reverend Edgar Tufts, a minister affiliated the
private school with the Presbyterian church.
The school is well known for its gorgeous
architecture and old, native stone buildings,
and continues to educate students in seven
different program areas which include: Business
and Information Systems, Social Sciences,
Humanities, Honors Program, Education and
Physical Education, Performing Arts, and Science
& Mathematics. Currently Lees-McRae College
offers no graduate degrees, but there is a
growing movement towards trying to establish
these types of degrees and courses of study for
students and alumnae in the future. |
