The High Country of
North Carolina has long enjoyed the
reputation of being a cultural center
with thousands of artists, performers and
crafters calling the area home because of its
unique, tranquil lifestyle. Our
region is diverse, with a great deal of
arts and cultural interests, and many
options for Western North Carolina activities
and entertainment year round.
Both Lees-McRae College and Appalachian State
University feature events and programs
throughout the year, as well as draw record
crowds seasonally with both of their famed
summer festivals and theatre events. Appalachian
State’s Appalachian Summer
Festival usually lasts through June and July, and
attracts more than 25,000 people each season with
its many featured acts in music, dance, theatre
and even the visual arts. Rated as one of the
“Top 20 Events in the Southeast” by the
Southeast Tourism Society, an Appalachian Summer
Festival is sure to entertain you and your loved
ones all season long! Lees-McRae College’s
Summer Theatre is equally as renowned as the
Appalachian Summer Festival events, and runs
seasonally from June through August. The Summer
Theatre features several shows a season
at numerous different times and
schedules, creating a perfect time for everyone to enjoy a show.
Tickets for these events typically go on sale in
March, so be sure to get yours today!
Horn in the West is a popular show in
Boone, and
has been running since its opening performance
in 1952. Each summer, visitors and locals flock
to the outdoor amphitheatre and watch this revolutionary war drama play out.
The show follows the
Stuart
Family on their voyage from Great Britain to the
new colony and their life in the Blue Ridge
Mountains as settlers. This show is always a
favorite and has several different running times
throughout the season. Also at the site of Horn
in the West is the Hickory Ridge Homestead, a
living history museum that teaches visitors
about what life in the mountains was like during
the time of the Revolutionary War, and is always
a nice place to tour.
For other live performances check out the show
schedules at Blowing Rock’s Hayes Center for the
Performing Arts. Home to the Blowing Rock Stage
Company, directed by Kenneth Kay, the Hayes
Center features several shows each summer season
and another completely different set of shows
for the autumn season. |
