The more than two thousand mile trail meanders through fourteen states along the eastern United States, part of which goes through our region of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Nearly 300 miles of the Appalachian Trail runs through Western North Carolina, attracting more and more visitors each year. Whether you are a novice hiker or a veteran ridge runner, the Appalachian Trail invites you to explore what it has in store.

The Appalachian Trail loosely follows the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina, while also meandering through Cherokee National Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are a few points of entry to the Southern Appalachian portion of the trail near the High Country. The major trailhead in North Carolina, near our Beech Mountain Real Estate is just 2.5 miles north of Elk Park where the trail crosses US 19 East. Another trailhead can be reached from Bakersville, roughly 14 miles south, where the trail crosses NC 261. The following mountain peaks in North Carolina are accessible from the trail, Gregory Bald, Thunderhead Mountain, Clingmans Dome, Mt Collins and Mt. Chapman.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina has been a favorite past time of novice and expert hikers for years. This popularity might be accredited to the ease of access to the trail. The trail is well marked, and should be followed, as it is possible to get lost as a result of leaving the main trail.

The Southern Appalachian section of the trail is critically acclaimed as the most rewarding portion of the tail as there are outstanding views and scenery. Mountain laurel and rhododendron are most prominent, in season. Sights of mountaintop meadows are also promising throughout the hike in the Southern Appalachian section.
